Not Your Mom’s Impossible Cheeseburger Pie

Impossible Cheeseburger Pie is a classic Betty Crocker Recipe using Bisquick, but it’s kind of bland the way it’s written. What if we could make it better? We are going to amp it up with this super simple recipe that builds on the original. I created the Not Your Mom’s Impossible Cheeseburger Pie recipe because I don’t like bland food, and this one is loads better than the original.

What’s a cheeseburger without ketchup and mustard? Well it’s just a bland ole burger? Impossible Cheeseburger pie is a classic recipe, but it’s missing a lot. I’ll be honest, it’s kind of bland the way it’s written. I updated this recipe to make it more like a true cheeseburger, and who doesn’t like a cheeseburger. This is super easy to make, follows the normal recipe, with some simple additions as you are browning your group beef or turkey.

A Better Impossible Cheeseburger Pie

Where’s the ketchup and mustard, and you’re going to need some seasoning. Here’s what makes this Impossible Cheeseburger Pie recipe better than the original:

  • You’ll need some seasoning. 1/2 tsp salt isn’t going to cut it. Put some BBQ Rub on those burgers.
  • Add some ketchup or chili sauce. I prefer chili sauce since it has more flavor, but you can use ketchup or your favorite BBQ sauce.
  • Don’t forget the mustard. I use dry mustard, but you can use regular mustard if that’s all you’ve got.

Simply brown your ground turkey and add these additional ingredients. The rub, chili sauce, and mustard is going to transform the basic Impossible Cheeseburger Pie into a dish that has loads of flavor.

Ideally I would use some onion, and mix it into the ground turkey after it’s been browned. Having said that, my kids are not big fans of onions in their meals, so I’ve substituted onion and garlic powder. If you can pull it off, mix some diced onion into the ground turkey for some added flavor.

Once you’ve got the meat all mixed up and ready to go, spoon it into a 9 inch greased pie pan. Sprinkle your cheese of choice over the meat, I prefer Sharp Cheddar, but use whatever makes you happy. Mix up the Bisquick with milk and eggs, slowly pour it over the meat and cheese, and your ready to bake.

Don't settle for you mom's Impossible Cheeseburger Pie, lets make it better than the original.
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 31 minutes
Servings: 4 Servings
Course: Main Course
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Lean Ground Turkey
  • 1 Cup Milk
  • 1/2 Cup Bisquick Mix
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 1 Cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese
  • 2 Tsp BBQ Rub
  • 2 Tbsp Chili Sauce
  • 1 Tsp Dry Mustard
  • 1 Tsp Onion Powder
  • 1 Tsp Garlic Powder

Equipment

  • 1 9 inch pie plate

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees and spray 9 inch pie pan with cooking spray.
  2. Brown Ground Turkey. Add BBQ rub, chili sauce, dry mustard, and onion & garlic powder and stir to combine.
  3. Mix Bisquick, milk, and eggs in a bowl with a small whisk.
  4. Drain ground turkey and transfer to pie pan
  5. Sprinkle cheese over ground turkey in pie pan
  6. Pour Bisquick mixture slowly over ground turkey and cheese in pie pan
  7. Bake in oven for 31 minutes (yes 31 min.). Let rest for 5 min. before slicing.

Notes

  1. I really think the key addition here is the BBQ rub. It gives the dish some actual flavor.
  2. You can use anything you want, but my preference is Meat Church’s Holy Gospel rub. Be liberal. You are seasoning 3 – 4 burgers, so use as much rub as you would when grilling up a pound of burgers.
  3. Slice pie into 8 equal pieces. One serving is equal to 2 pieces of pie.
