This Pizza Sauce Recipe is another one of those family recipes that my dad came up with. I haven’t made this in years, but since I’m trying to get all my recipes organized on this blog, makes me want to revisit this one.

Furthermore. Given my daughter and son-in-law just gifted us a pizza oven for Christmas, there’s some urgency in trying this recipe out again.
Now there’s a lot of debate if pizza sauce should be cooked or uncooked. Uncooked or raw sauce provides more of a fresh tomato flavor, while cooked sauce develops a deeper concentrated taste. Personally I prefer the richness of a cooked sauce, and that’s what you’ll get in this recipe.
Pizza Sauce Recipe
My dad’s pizza sauce recipe consists of 8 simple ingredients, and is more than enough to sauce 2 large pizzas.
- Crushed Tomatoes
- Olive Oil
- Minced Onion
- Minced Garlic
- Tomato Paste
- Basil
- Sugar
- Salt
A word on the tomatoes. Using canned crushed tomatoes keeps this recipe simple, but don’t cheap out. Using a high quality canned tomato will make a difference. I prefer using San Marzano tomatoes for this pizza sauce.
Preparation is simple. Mince up the onion and garlic and saute over very low heat. Add the remaining ingredients, bring to a boil, and simmer for 30 minutes. When I say simmer, you want a very low heat simmer. Be sure to stir frequently.
You’ll want this sauce to be completely cool before using it on any pizza dough, otherwise you risk precooking the dough.
